2025 Canterbury Finalist: Will Wilding of Te Mania Livestock – Beef Genetics
Te Mania Livestock has successfully diversified in recent years, building on its renowned stud cattle breeding operation that has a rich 90-year history.
Owned by Thomas Grothe, the 2,500ha Hurunui business is spread over three farms. Led by General Manager Will Wilding, the team continues to push the boundaries of innovation as the business expands, while also maintaining a commitment to genetic excellence and environmental stewardship.
The core of Te Mania’s business remains its world-class Angus stud, producing high-quality bulls and heifers that are sought after by breeders worldwide. However, the farm has diversified to also include fattening cattle (40% of its business) and dairy grazing (10%).
One of the key drivers of Te Mania’s success is the team’s relentless pursuit of innovation. To improve efficiency and productivity, they have embraced cutting-edge technologies such as using drones to over-sow pastures.
In addition, the team is actively involved in research projects, including one trial that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through genetic selection.
Environmental stewardship is another cornerstone of Te Mania’s operations, with 300ha of the property protected by QEII covenants. An ecologist is mapping all wetlands to inform a comprehensive approach to environmental management. This will help with both water-take consent renewals and managing stock exclusion rules and regulations.
Another demonstration of the team’s commitment to environmental sustainability is the widespread use of catch crops to help minimise nitrogen leaching.
Te Mania’s commitment to its staff is evident in its focus on training and development. By investing in its people, the farm is ensuring a skilled and motivated workforce that is capable of driving the business forward.
As Te Mania continues to evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to produce high-quality livestock, protect the environment, and contribute to the ongoing development of the New Zealand beef industry.
