2025 Northland Finalists: Pete Bond and Kelly Hackett of Bond Farms – Sheep and Beef

Exceptional farm management, strong teamwork, and a commitment to environmental sustainability are the key drivers behind this successful Kaipara beef and sheep farm.

Bond Farms is owned and operated by Bruce and Patsy Bond, along with their son Pete and his partner Kelly Hackett who run day-to-day operations while raising their two young children. Hayden Noyer manages the sheep and beef unit.

The original 40ha block was purchased by Bruce’s father in the 1950s, with the family gradually expanding it to the 870ha (800ha effective) it is today.

The team runs 1,200 sheep and about 1,700 cattle across the property’s three blocks. The judges said the farm’s impressive financial performance was a testament to the team’s strategic approach and focus on efficiency.

They praised the excellent pasture management that features careful grazing plans, a focus on soil health, and effective weed control. Ultimately this is resulting in high-quality pastures and improved animal performance.

The family has undertaken an extensive waterway fencing project, completing over 20 kilometres in the past nine years. This significant effort demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental protection and water quality.

A robust biosecurity programme minimises the risk of disease outbreaks, protecting both animal health and the farm’s profitability.

There’s a focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance, with systems in place to ensure staff have adequate time off and opportunities to recharge.

The judges said another key to the farm’s success was the shared vision and effective communication between Pete and Kelly – resulting in a meticulously managed property.

Looking ahead, the couple is committed to further enhancing the farm’s environment. Recent wetland retirement and fencing projects are already creating valuable habitats for native birds and plants, while ongoing efforts will continue to improve soil health and water quality.

Pete and Kelly were the winners of the NZFET Biodiversity Award.
