2025 Otago Finalists: Tracy and Andrew Paterson of Matakanui Station – Sheep and Beef

Under the guidance of Tracy and Andrew Paterson, Matakanui Station has undergone a significant transformation, as they blend tradition with innovation to enhance both productivity and sustainability.

Across the 5,300ha (4,000ha effective) freehold area of their land, they run 22,000 Polwarth sheep – supplying their fine wool for use in high-end brands plus finishing lambs. In addition, they run 1,100 Hereford cattle for beef, and derive income from a Polwarth stud.

Matakanui Station was bought by Andrew’s grandfather in 1958, with Tracy and Andrew working there since 2001 – taking over sole ownership in 2014. Since arriving, the couple has made significant changes to impact both productivity and the farm’s natural environment.

They’ve invested heavily in irrigation, fencing, and pasture development, plus built upon the already well-established stud programme.

When it comes to enhancing the environment, 6.3ha of wetlands have been restored and partially planted, while a further 24ha will be enclosed this year. They actively monitor and manage water quality and are committed to reducing waste.

Tracy and Andrew are working with their neighbour to protect about 132ha of Totara with a QEII Trust covenant. When complete, it will be one of the biggest stands of alpine Totara in Otago – a significant boost to the natural environment.

Their commitment to continuous learning has led to adjustments in their cattle finishing programme, shifting towards a once-bred heifer fattening system after careful analysis.

The judges were impressed with the couple’s forward-thinking approach and early adoption of technology. This includes farm management tools that have resulted in tailored feed planning and stocking.

Their attention to health and safety, and practical use of water meter monitoring for irrigation management, were also praised. Looking to the future, the Patersons are exploring hydroelectric and solar power generation to enhance the property’s resilience.

Matakanui Station exemplifies how a deep respect for tradition, coupled with a commitment to innovation and sustainability, can shape a thriving future for both the land and those it supports.
