2025 Waikato Finalists: Tim Orlando-Reep of Manawanui Stock Trading Co – Beef and Carbon

Clever thinking and forward planning mean this modestly sized Waikato farm is punching above its weight in terms of production – while also caring for the land.

Under the guidance of Tim Orlando-Reep, the land at Manawanui is used to produce prime beef and sequest carbon. Tim’s the second generation of his family to farm the land and is continuing a strong focus on balancing economic and environmental sustainability.

He’s achieving this by finding ways to diversify and maximise production across the 176ha (150ha effective) property. Beef production contributes to 70% of the farm’s income, while the balance comes from carbon sequestration as part of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

Manawanui has 75ha registered under the ETS, with 10ha planted in pine and the remainder planted in poplar and willow. This innovative approach is currently returning about 26 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year – providing a valuable income stream from marginal land.

Both production and sustainability initiatives are guided by a five-year plan that outlines capital investment and the planting of native and exotic trees. Tim’s goal is to increase production by 10% each year for the next three years, while also focusing on sustainable land management practices.

Those practices include precision farming that uses technology to optimise grazing patterns, reduce soil compaction and improve animal welfare.

Soil health is boosted by careful management that includes regular soil testing and strategic winter grazing that minimises soil disturbance. The farm avoids cultivation and cropping, focusing instead on regenerative grazing practices. The judges were impressed with Tim’s excellent land management and mapping.

Many of the vulnerable areas have been retired and planted with native vegetation – protecting waterways and enhancing biodiversity.

By embracing new technologies, diversifying income streams, and prioritising environmental stewardship, Manawanui demonstrates the potential for innovative and sustainable farming practices.
