2025 Taranaki Finalists: Mathew and Vanessa Vujcich of Nine Streams Farm – Beef

The farming approach at Nine Streams Farm is strongly influenced by the proximity of a national park – ultimately meaning that environmental stewardship underpins all farming activities.

Over the past eight years, Mathew and Vanessa Vujcich have transformed the property, implementing an holistic and science-led approach. The farm is bordered on two sides by a national park, making them keenly aware of the area’s precious natural values.

In summer, they run about 220 dairy beef cross steers across the 96.5ha (63.3ha effective) Inglewood property, reducing this to about 85 over winter.

By using science and modern technology to better understand their farming operation’s environmental footprint, they closely monitor changes to biodiversity and soil, pasture and water quality – making improvements where they are needed.

Their income is derived from finishing beef cattle, so there is a strong priority on animal health and optimising growth rates.

Significant infrastructure improvements have enhanced biodiversity and improved water quality. This includes fencing subdivision and installing water troughs to all paddocks plus extensive riparian fencing.  Waterways, bush remnants and wetland areas have been stock-proofed and are protected by active pest control. More than 20,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted, with the farm now featuring four areas protected by QEII covenants.

The couple actively engages with the community – hosting open days, farm walks and field trips for local schools and agencies – sharing their knowledge in the hope it will inspire others to embrace sustainable farming practices.

The judges were impressed by the farm’s holistic approach and the significant progress achieved in a relatively short time. They said that Nine Streams Farm demonstrates that farmers can create successful and sustainable businesses while still prioritising environmental stewardship.

Through continuous learning and adaption, Mathew and Vanessa are demonstrating it’s possible to have a positive impact on both the farm and the surrounding environment.
