2024 Otago Finalists: Lyndon & Jade McNab of Lochindorb Run – Sheep and Beef

As thirdgeneration family farmers, Lyndon and Jade McNab run this successful sheep and beef operation in harmony with the land and its natural biodiversity.

Lochindorb Run was originally bought by Lyndon’s grandfather in 1953 and was passed down to his parents who still help out today. Lyndon and Jade began working at the property in 2010 and, nine years later, bought the stock and plant, and started leasing the land.

Today they operate a sheep and beef, breeding and finishing operation across the 3,239ha (2,250ha effective) property. They run 6,200 sheep and about 700 beef cows.

Animals enjoy large grazing areas which are serviced by an excellent water reticulation system. Soil loss is carefully managed, including the reduction of animal numbers so pastures can be grazed multiple times. The judges were impressed with their innovative, light approach to winter crop grazing for soil protection, tailoring stock classes and trialling various mixed crop species.

The McNab’s have ambitious plans – some of which are already underway, such as the exclusion of stock from areas rich in biodiversity, and extensive pest and predator control.

Most recently, they excluded stock from a 70ha area that is earmarked for a QEII covenant and features native bush, a peat wetland and a rock landmark. This is additional to the 80ha protected by previous generations. Extensive fencing is underway, which includes about 70% of waterways.

The judges commended Jade and Lyndon for running their business around – not over the top of – biodiversity, and the focus on further improving wetlands and other habitats.

The McNab’s are committed to being good employers and are also strongly connected to the wider community, including professionals who provide advice. All farming decisions are guided by a desire to do right by the land, and sharing the beautiful space with others.
