2025 Southland Finalists: Jody and Blair Drysdale of Hopefield – Arable and Beef
The couple behind this Southland property recognise their role as responsible custodians of the land, meaning they are constantly striving to improve their farming methods.
Jody and Blair Drysdale run a predominantly arable farming operation across their 321ha (296ha effective) property, although a small portion is leased out for tulips. They’re driven by an overarching goal to grow crops that feed both humans and animals in a sustainable way.
Hopefield has been in their family since the 1960s and for the past 16 years Jody and Blair have farmed under the Drylands Farming umbrella. Blair looks after day-to-day management of the farming operation, with Jody taking care of financials and administration.
As well as growing traditional crops, they grow hemp and with it have a full value add-business – further diversifying their income streams.
Rather than simply aiming for maximum yield, they focus on seed quality, economic margins and the long-term health of the land. They do this by carefully considering crop rotations and optimising nutrient use.
Foliage testing is utilised to assess micronutrient requirements, subsequently optimising fertiliser application. In addition, there’s a comprehensive nutrient plan for each paddock. This precision nutrient management approach has significantly decreased fertiliser inputs.
Meanwhile, crop rotations are closely managed to improve soil health, enhance subsequent crop performance and optimise the use of crop residues.
Jody and Blair are constantly seeking to improve their farming methods, for example they have created and modified ponds to capture sediment, slow water flow, and provide a recreational area for duck shooting.
The judges were impressed by their willingness to try new things, their openness to advice, and their dedication to sharing their knowledge with others. They said the couple’s strategic thinking and commitment to sustainable practices serve as a model for other farmers in the region.
Hopefield’s success highlights the importance of an holistic approach to farming, where environmental stewardship and economic viability are intertwined.
