2025 Auckland Finalists: James and Stephanie Kellow of Lighthouse Station Farm – Beef

A significant conservation effort is underway at Lighthouse Station as the owners strive to transform the previously neglected and overgrazed property into a profitable, self-sustaining ecosystem.

Owners James and Stephanie Kellow have a strong sense of stewardship over the 600ha property which is located at the tip of the Manukau Harbour Southern Headland. About 70% of the land is used for either cattle wintering and grazing, or gamebird hunting, with the couple’s business approach built on a foundation of sustainability.

With the support of a manager, staff and local iwi Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua, the Kellow’s have created impressive wildlife corridors, reduced erosion and created crucial habitat and feeding grounds for native fauna at the station.

More than 300,000 endemic native species have been planted, while stock-proof fencing protects these vital areas. Ultimately, the couple wants to create a pest-free, ecological haven on the Awhitu Peninsula.

Their vision includes preserving culturally significant sites and offering a public access area for people to connect with and appreciate the natural beauty and heritage of the land.

A key focus at the station is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with them well on their way to becoming certified carbon zero. To support this goal, innovative practices are implemented across the property, including trials, planting experimentation, and chlorinating water to improve stock health.

The owners demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental best practices. A sophisticated livestock water reticulation system – monitored by an app – enables them to quickly identify and repair leaks, minimising water waste.

Land use is tailored to suit the environment, guided by careful farm management that utilises science and outside expertise.

The judges said this team’s tremendous conservation efforts are fostering a legacy of ecological balance and community engagement. Their work demonstrates that sustainable and profitable farming practices can be successfully integrated with significant environmental restoration.
