2025 Auckland Finalists: Deb Crump of ASB MAGS Farm – Sheep Dairy, Beef and Education

This once-colonial Auckland property has been transformed into a small but perfectly diverse school farm where students can explore agriculture as a potential career.

ASB MAGS Farm was purchased by The Auckland Savings Bank in 1933 from the Kerr-Taylor family, with the purpose of connecting Auckland children with agriculture and horticulture. Now owned by the Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) Foundation, the farm is thriving under manager Deb Crump’s stewardship.

Deb arrived in 2022, and the 8.8ha (8.1ha effective) farm immediately underwent a facelift. The farm offers a diverse range of experiences to hundreds of students each year, with a strong focus on animal welfare, sustainability and education.

Students learn valuable skills in animal husbandry, business management and environmental stewardship. They actively participate in many aspects of farm life – from milking sheep and rearing beef to beekeeping and sunflower cultivation.

Through classes and initiatives like the Farm Club and cadetship, students are regularly connected with the realities of agriculture and many of them are inspired to consider farming as a career.

The farm’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its comprehensive water testing, riparian plantings, and active pest control. By breeding for strong genetics, the farm is minimising the impact of climate change on its livestock.

A connected horticultural area and orchard has flourished under the guidance of specialist gardener Melena Myles and Deb. The orchard now supplies staff and students with fruit to enjoy year-round.

The judges were particularly impressed by the farm’s dedication to health and safety, with strict rules for visitors and robust biosecurity measures.

MAGS Farm serves as a powerful reminder that even in close proximity to one of New Zealand’s largest cities, sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship can thrive.
