2025 Greater Wellington Finalists: Shane and Lynnette McManaway of Ongaha – Sheep, beef and crops
The owners of Ongaha Station have transformed their farm in just three years, while also demonstrating that intensive farming can be both profitable and environmentally responsible.
Shane and Lynnette McManaway are committed to both the environment and being sustainable while prioritising water quality, animal health, and biodiversity. With the support of manager Nico Butler, they have undertaken a significant, three-year transformation of the 580ha (514 effective) sheep, beef and cropping farm.
The team has installed about 63 kilometres of new fencing, upgraded infrastructure and embarked on ambitious environmental projects. These include the establishment of a 12ha fenced wetland, the implementation of a comprehensive real-time time water monitoring programme and the planting of 75,000 native trees and shrubs.
Shane and Lynnette believe in continuous improvement while making the best decisions for both the farm and the environment. They use modern technology to achieve this and collaborate with experts from farm consultants to animal health specialists.
Annually, they run 1,400 lambed ewes, graze about 80 dairy heifers, and fatten 5,000 lambs. They also run 150 hundred trade cattle plus cultivate between 150 and 200ha with specialised crops, including onion seed, mustard, and hybrid corn.
Ongaha has a comprehensive stocking policy that includes wintering trade lambs and grazing cattle year-round. The summer cash cropping also contributes to the herbal layered pasture renewal programme.
The judges were particularly impressed by Ongaha’s commitment to animal husbandry and their proactive approach to environmental management. They praised the team’s vision which combines profitability with a laser focus on environmental stewardship.
Guided by the mantra – your attitude determines your altitude – Shane and Lynnette are demonstrating that intensive farming can be conducted sustainably. By prioritising environmental stewardship, embracing innovation, and focusing on long-term sustainability, they have created a thriving business that sets an impressive standard for the industry.
