2025 Otago Finalists: Nigel and Leanne Woodhead of Remote Farming – Sheep, beef and forestry

Nigel and Leanne Woodhead are building on the strong foundation laid by Nigel’s parents – ensuring a prosperous future for both their farm and family.

In 1993, Remote was purchased by Nigel’s parents who transformed it into a productive and thriving sheep, beef and forestry business. Nigel and Leanne started leasing the property in 2015 and eight years later purchased the 400ha (380ha effective) farm.

Their farming approach is guided by a commitment to continuing the legacy of Nigel’s parents – building a sustainable business for generations to come. They are implementing farming practices that protect the environment and will ensure the long-term viability of the farm.

Today they run 2,000 ewes, 550 hoggets and 60 bulls across 250ha of the property. A forestry block covers the remaining 130ha, with 80ha of that planted in the past two years.

Being adaptable and implementing new strategies has improved the farm’s productivity year-on-year, despite external pressures. By expanding the forestry block, the Woodheads further diversified the business and made use of vulnerable land.

It builds on their crop diversification where the couple effectively grows a variety of crops. They use different management practices to boost production while minimising environmental impact.

Nigel and Leanne have a strong understanding of soil health and nutrient management. They utilise minimum tillage practices to reduce soil erosion and compaction, and conduct regular soil testing to optimise fertiliser use and reduce inputs.

The judges were particularly impressed with their comprehensive approach to winter grazing management, including detailed paddock plans and thorough record-keeping.

By being mindful that they are farming today because of the hard work of those who came before, the Woodheads are continuing a legacy of successful farming and creating opportunities for future generations.
