2025 Canterbury Finalists: James and Samara Wright of Forest Creek Station – Sheep, Beef and Deer
Under the stewardship of James and Samara Wright, Forest Creek Station has undergone a significant transformation that balances environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and productivity.
Farm Manager James was originally employed six years ago as a stock manager for the 4,432ha (1,784ha effective) intensive sheep, beef, deer and forestry farm. Three years ago, he started managing the farm with Samara.
They currently run 7,500 ewes and 2,100 hoggets (lambed), 400 R1 and 400 R2 finishing cattle, 730 velveting stags and a small hind herd to breed replacements.
The team has implemented a range of innovative initiatives to enhance sustainability. This includes the extensive fencing and planting of waterways, creating a comprehensive water reticulation system, and implementing a rigorous water and soil testing programme. By monitoring and managing these vital resources, Forest Creek Station is ensuring the long-term health of the land and its ecosystems.
The team’s commitment to biodiversity is evident in its efforts to protect and restore native habitats. By excluding livestock from sensitive areas and planting native trees, they are creating a thriving environment for a diverse range of flora and fauna.
In addition to environmental stewardship, Forest Creek Station is dedicated to animal welfare and productivity. Strategic grazing practices are in place, maximising the use of pastures while improving animal health. Development and increased pasture production has led to a 25% increase in cattle numbers and the doubling of deer numbers.
Innovative technologies such as precision agriculture are embraced, ultimately optimising the farm’s resource use and reducing its environmental impact.
Forest Creek Station serves as a model for sustainable farming, demonstrating that it is possible to balance environmental responsibility with economic success.
James and Samara’s personal values align with those of the owners, meaning that together they are ensuring a bright future for the farm and its surrounding environment.
