2025 Southland Finalists: Clarke and Megan Horrell of Huntly Farm – Sheep and Beef
The couple behind this Waikaia sheep and beef farm are gradually growing the business, while adapting and being mindful of their changing environment.
Clarke Horrell’s family connection to Huntly Farm reaches back to 1909, with himself and wife Megan now running the farm. They run sheep and beef across the 720 ha (670 ha effective) property, finishing lambs and breeding replacements. Livestock includes just over 6,000 ewes, 2,000 hoggets, about 60 rams and 160 head of cattle.
They have a strong growth mindset, underpinned by a commitment to sustainable practices and innovation. The ultimate goal for this couple is to ensure the long-term sustainability of Huntly Farm, while continuing to grow with small, incremental gains.
The judges were impressed with their dedication to continuous improvement and a deep understanding of their land and livestock. They constantly challenge themselves to improve farming practices – remaining open to feedback and seeking new ways to increase efficiency and sustainability.
Strong scanning percentages and a steady increase in lamb weights demonstrate their focus on animal health and productivity. Meanwhile, comprehensive soil testing across the entire farm means that fertiliser is applied strategically based on feed supply and soil type characteristics.
Beyond their farming operation, the family actively engages with their community, contributing their time and expertise to various local groups. They also prioritise environmental stewardship, with initiatives that include planting native trees and shrubs, and creating a lake for recreational use.
The judges were impressed by Clarke and Megan’s forward thinking and their willingness to adapt practices to meet the evolving needs of their farm and the environment.
The success of Huntly Farm is a testament to the family’s dedication, their deep understanding of their land and livestock, and their commitment to sustainable and innovative farming practices.
