Over the past 24 years Joanna and Paul McCarthy have transformed what use to be a scruffy drain into a lush oasis of ponds and trees.
Paul, whose hobby is the study and cultivation of trees or woody plants, formed the lakes for the birds. The water fowl came and Paul embarked on a planting programme which rapidly spread from the ponds to the grounds around the house. The McCarthys also planted shelter and shade trees in the paddocks.
