2025 Canterbury Finalist: Stuart Neill of Pukatea Dairy Farms – Dairy
For nearly three decades, Stuart Neill has been at the helm of this dairy farm partnership, setting a benchmark for sustainable and ethical farming practices.
The partnership’s commitment to environmental stewardship, animal welfare, and staff wellbeing is evident across all farming practices at the 221ha (200ha effective) property.
One of their most significant changes is the reduction of milkings from 14 per week to 10. This decision, driven by a desire to prioritise animal welfare and create a more enjoyable work environment, has had a positive impact on both the herd and the farm’s overall sustainability.
A key focus for the farm has been the improvement of water quality. By investing in drainage systems, sediment traps, and riparian planting, Stuart has significantly reduced nutrient and sediment loss into waterways. These efforts have resulted in some of the lowest water nitrate levels in the Amuri Basin.
Stuart’s commitment to soil health is evident in his meticulous approach to soil testing and nutrient management. By tailoring inputs to specific soil types and crop requirements, he has optimised productivity while minimising environmental impact.
In addition to environmental stewardship, the partnership prioritises animal welfare by implementing a range of measures – including strategic winter grazing and careful herd management. Stuart ensures that the herd is always well cared for.
The farm’s success is also due to a strong focus on people. Stuart has fostered a dedicated and skilled workforce by creating a positive work environment and investing in employee training and development.
The partnership’s innovative approach to farming has maintained the farm’s profitability while also contributing to the overall health and sustainability of the local ecosystem. Their dedication to ethical and sustainable practices serves as an inspiration to other farmers and demonstrates that it is possible to balance productivity with environmental responsibility.
