2025 Taranaki Finalists: Craig and Mary Dorn – Dairy

This couple has successfully adapted their small Stratford dairy farm to perfectly suit their family lifestyle – reducing their workload while focusing on animal and soil health.

Craig and Mary Dorn wanted to create a farm where they could raise their children while enjoying a farming lifestyle. They purchased the Huinga property 11 years ago, and since then have transformed the property by significantly improving its infrastructure, farming practices and natural environment.

They milk 102 cross-breed cows across 43ha, and moved to once-a-day milking five years ago. They farm a System 1.5 and the change has allowed them to spend more time with their family while maintaining strong production and low empty rates.

In terms of infrastructure improvements, they have replaced the entire water network, upgraded the effluent system and have re-fenced most of the property. A new race system has been created, making it more functional and easier to access, particularly in wet conditions.

A focus on soil health has seen them implement minimum tillage practices and utilise precision fertiliser application based on regular soil and herbage testing.

Craig and Mary believe in doing the basics right, with this driving a strong focus on animal and soil health, and efficient farm management. Ultimately, it enables them to achieve good production while maintaining a sustainable and enjoyable lifestyle.

The couple has also prioritised environmental stewardship, undertaking extensive riparian planting and the fencing of waterways. These initiatives enhance biodiversity while improving water quality.

The judges were impressed by the couple’s dedication to their family and commitment to sustainable farming practices. They said that the business demonstrates it is possible to achieve good production while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Through hard work and a clear vision, Craig and Mary are demonstrating that a successful and fulfilling farming career can be built around a family-centric approach.
