2024 Canterbury Finalist: John Wright & Richard Green of Wainono Dairy – Dairy & Dairy Support

The number of cows has doubled at Wainono Dairy since it was converted in 2006, with this growth balanced against a strong focus on enhancing the environment.

The Fairlie farm is comprised of a 730ha dairy platform and 640ha dairy farm, supported by a total run-off area of 491ha and some lease land.

Under the guidance of John Wright and Richard Green, Wainono Dairy has gone from running 900 cows in 2006, to the 1,850 self-contained dairy operation it is today.
It’s run as an equity partnership, deriving 90% of income from dairy and 10% from beef. In the 2022/23 year, they produced about 785,000kg of milk solids.

The judges commended John and Richard for their excellent knowledge of the complete farming picture. This includes a good understanding of the property’s water, emissions and nutrient needs, along with its biodiversity.

The judges were impressed with the use of technology and the gathering of data to guide decisions on the farm. This enables such things as the careful management of stock and the conservative use of supplementary feed.

Detailed soil mapping and risk maps ensure the duo has an excellent understanding of the property’s soil. In recent years, they’ve combined this knowledge with the effective management of limited irrigation water, ultimately reducing water use by one-quarter.

Enhancing the environment is a priority, and includes careful planning around winter grazing and stock management during adverse weather events. This is supported by the extensive planting of waterways and other areas that have been retired, including wetlands.

Richard and John are not afraid to try new things, including trialling hops and investigating solar power options. Their sustainable approach is paving the way for Wainono Dairy to be successful well into the future.
