2025 Waikato Finalists: Roger and Judith Hunt – Dairy

By prioritising soil health, animal welfare and caring for the land, the team behind this farm has achieved high levels of milk production while minimising environmental impact.

The 85ha (82ha effective) Horsham Downs property has been in the Hunt family for almost 50 years, with current owners Roger and Judith purchasing it in 1989. Today they run it with support from 50:50 sharemilkers Michael and Monique Allison.

The team’s well-managed production system has resulted in profitable business that is also sustainable. In 2024, the farm produced 102,000kgs of milk solids.

The property has been a way of life for both Roger and Judith, and taking an integrated approach has been a key to their success. Examples of how they’re in tune with the land include how they have tailored cow breed to land type, along with their strong focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

They transitioned from Friesian cows to crossbreeds that are lighter and better suited to the local environment – ultimately producing less greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions are further reduced by buying-in maize which minimises the amount of feed that needs to be grown on the farm.

Soil health is boosted through careful nutrient management, including precision fertiliser application and rotational grazing. The strategic rotation of alternative crops also enhances and protects the soil quality.

Meticulous record keeping combines with a deep knowledge of the farm’s soil and subsequent nutrient application – ultimately benefitting soil, animal, and pasture health.

The judges were inspired by Roger and Judith’s commitment to leaving the land in an improved state for the next generation of farmers.

This property’s success story demonstrates that sustainable practices can lead to both environmental and economic benefits – showcasing the potential for a thriving and sustainable future for the agricultural sector.
