2025 Horizons Finalists: Michael Phillips, Oliver Sandbrook and Andrew Evans of Waka Dairies – Dairy
This family-owned dairy farm operation is setting a new standard for sustainable and efficient farming practices across the 380ha (230ha effective) Dannevirke property.
Led by Managing Director Michael Phillips, whose family has been connected to the land for nearly 120 years, and Business Manager Andrew Evans (AKA Bubbles), Waka Dairies has successfully transitioned to a more sustainable and productive farming model.
The vision of Michael and Bubbles is clear: to be a leading producer, prioritising food, natural capital, skills, culture and energy. This has given them a sharp focus on building a repeatable farming system that respects the environment and provides for the future.
A key to Waka Dairies’ success lies in the strong relationship between Michael and Bubbles who operate as business partners – each playing to their strengths and continually striving for improvement.
This collaborative approach has driven significant changes. This includes shifting from a 900-cow, spring calving system with high levels of imported feed, to a 650-cow, autumn calving system where they grow most of their own feed – all while increasing production.
Michael and Bubbles embrace innovative ideas as they strive to balance efficiency with environmental sustainability. They have invested in a state-of-the-art composting barn which has boosted animal, soil and pasture health. This is complemented by modern and efficient effluent and water storage systems, along with cow collars and energy efficient tractors.
The judges said that Waka Dairies exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to dairy farming, prioritising environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and continuous improvement. They were impressed with the team’s dedication to innovation and their commitment to building a sustainable future for the farm, saying the farm serves as a model for the dairy industry.
