2025 Canterbury Finalist: John Faulkner of Lockerbie Farms – The Terrace and Kereone – Dairy

Amuri farmer John Faulkner is carrying on a long family tradition of dairy farming, guided by the belief that farming resilience brings together families and the wider community.

Lockerbie Farms comprises two properties – a 162ha dairy farm that at its peak milks about 550 cows, and a nearby 47ha dairy support block which is used for winter grazing.

John has implemented a range of initiatives that boost productivity and reduce the farm’s environmental impact.

Infrastructure improvements include upgrading the irrigation and effluent systems, and refurbishing the dairy shed so it’s now bigger and features an automated drafting system. Farm waterways are fully fenced, and the wider team regularly test both water and soil.

John is committed to animal welfare and staff wellbeing. Animal health, nutrition, and comfort is prioritised to ensure that livestock thrives. Meanwhile, fostering a positive work environment means the farm has impressive staff retention rates.

The farming strategy is underpinned by high levels of data which culminate in a range of well-prepared farm plans.

Off-farm, John was involved in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy for 10 years, including a tenure as Chair. This gave him valuable insights that have been applied to his own farming practices and to governance roles with Hurunui District Landcare Group and Dairy Environment Leaders.

John’s dedication to both his community and sustainability is evident in his involvement with the Kereone Restoration Project. This large area of native planting is being created as an area of cultural significance for both local iwi and the community. Significant achievements of the project include extensive riparian plantings and enhancing braided rivers and bird nesting sites.

By embracing sustainable practices and fostering strong community relationships, John is setting a positive example for the industry and ensuring a prosperous future for generations to come.
