2025 Taranaki Finalists: John & Donna McCarty of McCarty Farms – Dairy
Over the past 23 years, McCarty Farms has undergone a remarkable transformation, with the owners gradually building it into the high-performing dairy unit it is today.
At the same time, there’s a strong focus on environmental stewardship, with a range of sustainable practices in play – including effective stock exclusion, riparian planting, and a robust pest management programme.
John & Donna McCarty have been working on the 140ha (123ha effective) Taranaki farm for 30 years. They started as sharemilkers and gradually bought into the property until they became full owners in 2005.
By planning, working together and embracing new technologies, they have overcome challenges and achieved significant growth. Production has soared, reaching 160,000 milk solids three years ago – almost double the 87,000 milk solids they produced in 2005.
This growth is attributed to a combination of factors, including improved animal health, enhanced efficiency and the use of sustainable practices.
When it comes to animal health, they have achieved outstanding reproductive performance through the use of technology and a focus on identifying and managing fertility requirements.
Meanwhile, investments in modern infrastructure – such as a dairy shed and comprehensive effluent system – have significantly improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact. In particular, the new effluent system is boosting the health of freshwater.
The judges were impressed with the couple’s ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and their animal and pasture management – commenting that the farm was well subdivided and fit for purpose.
McCarty Farms serves as an inspiring example of how dairy farming can be both profitable and sustainable. Through a combination of innovation, hard work, and a commitment to continuous improvement, the farm has achieved remarkable success while maintaining a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
