2025 Otago Finalists: Francois and Shelley Tillard of Clydesdale Dairy – Dairy

This couple behind this Otago property have implemented a range of sustainable farming practices – ultimately demonstrating that dairy farms can be both sustainable and profitable.

Francois and Shelley Tillard prioritise soil health and have made significant infrastructure improvements at Clydesdale Dairy. They also have a strong focus on supporting their team’s well-being, particularly when it comes to health and safety.

The Tillards operate a year-round milking business, with a peak herd size of between 650 and 800 cows across the 206ha (196 ha effective) property. They also run a total of 150ha leased runoffs.

They have 25 years of dairy farming experience and arrived at Clydesdale Dairy in 2014. Since 2022, they have been 50:50 equity partners in the farm.

Despite the challenges of farming on heavy soil, the Tillards have worked tirelessly to improve their farm’s sustainability. A focus on efficiency and innovative irrigation solutions has been a key to their success. They have significantly invested in irrigation infrastructure and have plans for further expansion.

Soil health is a top priority, with the Tillards running a robust nutrient management programme. By composting sawdust and other organic matter, they capture and utilise nutrients that would otherwise be lost, creating a more self-contained system.

They also have a strong focus on the well-being of their team, ensuring they are supported, and protected by what the judges described as an exemplary health and safety plan. This includes monthly meetings that are chaired by a third party and annual audits – ensuring the working environment is safe.

The Tillards have a deep understanding of the farm’s strengths and weaknesses, and actively manage risks. Waterways are protected by significant riparian fencing and planting across the property.

The Tillards approach of continuous improvement is guided by a clear goal to never compromise on people, animals, and the environment.
