2025 Otago Catchment Group Showcase: Thomsons Catchment Project

This successful initiative demonstrates the positive impact that community-led projects can have on the environment – ultimately creating healthier land and water for both people and wildlife.

Thomsons Catchment Project was launched in 2022, with 17 of the 19 farms within the area now actively involved. The project is led by local farmers, with strong support from the wider community, including the local school, councils, environmental groups and small businesses.

The group’s original goal was to find ways to improve water quality, however it has grown into something much bigger.

The initiative has led to the creation of a thriving 5ha wetland designed to improve water quality. This area has already become a rich environment for animals, birds and native plantings, plus has become a valuable and popular community asset. Local interest has grown, with volunteers leading bird monitoring and predator control groups at the wetland.

Another key achievement is the installation of a large fish barrier that protects critical habitat for the native Central Otago roundhead galaxiid. With the support of the Otago Regional Council, trout and perch are being removed above the barrier, creating a more favourable environment for the galaxiids. The group has also facilitated the installation of more than 45km of riparian fencing, with farmers providing the labour and Thomsons Catchment Project supplying the materials. In addition, riparian borders are now planted on ten properties.

The group works with each farmer in the catchment on individual sediment management plans. They also connect farmers with the local council to understand and share their modelling work, ultimately aiming to improve water quality.

The project operates under the umbrella of the Manuherekia Catchment Group which provides governance, holds consents for the works, and ensures the long-term sustainability of the project.
