Noel & Lorraine Fox
NR & LA Fox

4 Feb 2026

Noel and Lorraine Fox’s transition from sharemilkers to dairy farm owners has been a journey of calculated risk and unwavering commitment.

Having worked at the property since 1992, the couple purchased it in 2019 but not before demonstrating their dedication by buying an adjoining parcel and building their family home years prior – a bold move that underscored their single-minded goal.

Today, their farm is a thriving 87ha (84ha effective), self-contained ecosystem. Milking 180 Friesians in a 30-aside herringbone shed, the Foxes are masters at doing the basics well.

Through rigorous genetic selection, the cows have been bred specifically to suit property conditions. This attention to detail extends to land management. A flock of 40 ewes permanently grazes steep sidings to prevent erosion, maximise use of the land and ensure heavier cattle do not damage the pasture.

The landscape itself has undergone a dramatic transformation. Judges noted the impressive results of extensive drainage and contouring work which has turned swamps and uneven ground into productive paddocks. In terms of improving infrastructure, the couple invested in expanding the cowshed a number of years ago while still sharemilkers and are reaping the benefits now.

The integration of biodiversity makes this small farm truly special. Beyond high-standard riparian planting, the Foxes have created an extensive food forest that features vines and nearly 200 fruit trees. The plants enhance the farm’s aesthetic and environmental footprint while benefiting the wider community through produce donations.

Continuous improvement is tangible, with projects constantly in the pipeline – from removing willows to installing erosion barriers in partnership with the regional council. The family has a history of active involvement in the local community, including with schools, sports clubs and volunteer organisations.

The judges praised this property as being a fantastic example of a self-contained farm that is being run profitably while keeping animal health and food quality at top of mind.
