At Windale Dairy, a highly structured management approach is meeting cutting-edge technology to push the boundaries of environmental sustainability and efficiency.

In their eleventh season at Windale, contract managers Ben and Wendy Croft are demonstrating how intensive dairy farming can thrive alongside ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses.

The 262ha (252ha effective) operation, owned by George and Susie Gould, operates on a foundation of meticulous planning and monitoring.

Judges were impressed by the farm’s extensive documentation, including agronomic plans, nutrient budgets, and comprehensive farm environmental plans.

This is supported by annual whole-farm soil testing and routine inspections, including pasture walks every four days and monthly agronomist-led walks to ensure proactive maintenance of soil and crop health.

Ultimately, this demonstrates a proactive approach to integrating best practice with careful consideration of all aspects of farm management.

Central to the couple’s success is an openness to new ideas and the seamless integration of technology – exemplified by their innovative approach to fertiliser efficiency.

The farm utilises specialised spreading technology that enables highly precise fertiliser application. This not only reduces waste and environmental impact but also optimises efficiency and pasture performance.

Ben’s proactive approach to learning is embedded in the farm’s culture and ultimately drives continuous improvement. He’s actively involved in the wider community, including with the local catchment group which investigates and implements improved irrigation and soil health efficiency strategies. His involvement demonstrates the potential for practical knowledge from the farm to inform and support wider community and catchment-level efforts.

From carefully planned winter grazing to laneway improvements that enhance animal welfare and efficiency, Windale Farm is proving that ambitious, measurable sustainability goals can be successfully embedded into modern farm operations, balancing high productivity with dedicated environmental care.
