Donald & Kirsten Watson
Morelands Pastoral

4 Feb 2026

This small dairy and beef operation is a powerful example of how professional expertise and cutting-edge technology can transform a farm into a high-efficiency, sustainable business.

Nine years after purchasing Morelands Pastoral, owners Donald and Kirsten Watson have transformed it into a highly productive operation.

The farm is comprised of a 123ha (112ha effective) grazing block and attached 150ha runoff. Income is generated mainly from milk, supplemented by a small amount of cattle grazing and finishing.

The Watsons are both trained veterinarians, providing them with exceptional insight into animal genetics and welfare – ultimately resulting in a healthy and highly productive herd.

The Watsons have embraced integrated technology, including an innovative virtual fencing system. This tool informs grazing rotation speed and pasture-cover optimisation, plus reduces labour and supports animal health.

Their commitment to efficiency has significantly increased pasture harvest, driving profitability while reducing nitrogen use. They have also implemented a novel siphon drainage system for water table management.

The Watsons’ stewardship extends to the environment. They have invested considerably in improving the dairy effluent management system, ensuring optimal nutrient and water re-use for pasture irrigation.

Their focus on sustainability includes a comprehensive plan for wetland restoration and the protection of tidal areas. This is specifically aimed at improving habitat for aquatic life and the endangered Bittern, which they regularly observe foraging on the property.

All decisions are anchored in long-term planning and a deep understanding of soil health – particularly microbial balance. Considerable research into their soils has ultimately boosted production and enables them to control pests naturally.

The family has strong connections to the local community, regularly hosting field days on the farm, and working with conservation groups.

Morelands Pastoral has become a high-performance model that embodies the family’s goals of improving environmental, economic, and social well-being.
