Guided by three key focuses, the owners of this dairy farm embody a commitment to farming excellence that extends beyond the fence line.
Clarence and Elise Stolte have farmed the 387ha (360ha effective) farm for 18 years, progressing from farm managers to sole owners through a strategic partnership.
They’re guided by three key focuses that have ultimately led to constant improvements in both productivity and profitability, coupled with an increasing dedication to the health and beauty of their natural environment.
Their first focus is to produce high-quality, nutritious food. This is complemented by a commitment to prioritising staff and community relationships, plus ensuring the perpetual health of their soil, water, and infrastructure.
The Stoltes are recognised as industry leaders for their forward-thinking sustainability initiatives. A significant investment has been made in a composting barn which has minimised stress on pastures, boosted soil health and improved animal welfare.
They also embrace technology into their farming practices – for example the use of cow collars, and using social media to foster strong team communication.
Their commitment to the environment is visible through extensive tree planting over the past five years and the care of established wetlands. The couple’s on-farm nursery grows native plants for riparian planting and community use.
The judges were impressed with the Stoltes community spirit that includes being heavily involved in local catchment groups and schools. One particularly successful initiative saw their sunflower patch raise more than $12,500 in just two weeks for a post-natal charity.
Stolte Ag is an excellent illustration of what can be achieved with hard work, a positive culture and thoughtful decision-making that keeps both community and people in mind. With integrity flowing through every aspect of the business, the farm’s success looks set to continue into the future.
