Willy & Keely Muir
Muir Farming Partnership

4 Feb 2026

Building on more than 100 years of family farming legacy, this couple is operating a high-input dairy and dry stock enterprise while conserving their unique environment.

Willy and Keely Muir have carefully implemented farming practices that conserve the fragile black sand country and unique dune lakes that are found across the 700ha (620ha effective) property.

The farm is comprised of two blocks that are about 5kms apart. As well as producing milk from the dairy operation, they breed and sell store cattle, plus finish lambs.

Stocking rates across both blocks are carefully managed, with grazing restricted to ensure the ground and pasture cover remains intact. Areas prone to erosion are fenced off, and proactive measures taken to stabilise the surface and encourage recovery.

Dune lakes are actively protected, and riparian zones are subject to strict stock exclusion and extensive planting. This is part of a broader commitment to enhance native biodiversity, which includes protecting 50ha of QEII Trust covenanted native forest and active pest management. The result is a thriving population of native species, including some that are critically endangered.

Sustainability initiatives include significant investments in solar power and battery storage. In addition, the farm maximises the use of effluent as a nutrient source, spreading it across the milking platform to minimise environmental risk and reduce synthetic fertiliser use.

Healthy stock is a priority, supported by a ruminant nutritionist who helps maintain the condition of their high-producing dairy herd and well-fed Hereford cattle. The owners’ deep knowledge of farm systems allows them to align stock class, stocking rate, and seasonal grazing perfectly with the environment.

Beyond the gate, the Muirs show outstanding community involvement. For example, they founded the Awaroa Ki Karioitahi Landcare Catchment Group and regularly host Iwi-led school visits and environmental groups.

Groups visiting the farm are encouraged to contribute trees for planting, solidifying the Muirs’ role as leaders in sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.
