For nearly a century, the Kane family has farmed this 668ha (580ha effective) property, with today’s modern strategy reflected by significant evolution and precision.

Luke and Nicole Kane have successfully navigated the complexities of family succession to pivot toward a high-performing dairy operation that remains grounded in its multi-generational roots.

The transition to dairy was rolled out as part of the wider family succession plan. While the broader Kane Farms remains a shared family venture, Westholm Dairies is a distinct, 700-cow business owned by Luke and Nicole that operates under the family umbrella.

This model provides a robust, diversified income stream where milk provides most of the income – complemented by beef finishing, grazing, and an Angus stud.

The judges were particularly impressed by Luke and Nicol’s sophisticated, data-driven approach. From meticulously analysing gross margins to precision soil testing and fertiliser application, the business is built on a foundation of analytics. Smart technology is leveraged across the dairy herd to monitor health and performance, which the judges noted significantly increases efficiency while slashing waste.

Environmental stewardship is treated with the same level of discipline – for example the farm’s highly organised winter grazing plan. Blocks are pre-mapped and grass bales strategically placed to eliminate unnecessary tractor movements and protect soil structure.

A feeding pad for the Angus cattle further mitigates soil damage during wet periods, while fenced waterways and established shelter belts underscore a long-term commitment to sustainability.

Beyond the fence line, the Kanes maintain strong community connections with everyone from government representatives and industry organisations to local schools.

Their internal team culture is equally strong, with a focus on mentoring young local talent into agricultural careers.

The judges praised Westholm Dairies as being a business that honours its 100-year legacy while equally securing its future through innovation and environmental stewardship.
