2025 Horizons Finalists: Kate Kellick of Tokorangi Farm – Agriculture
The management of this Whanganui family farm embodies a commitment to sustainable farming practices and a diverse approach to agriculture that is setting the scene for future generations.
Fifth-generation farmer Kate Kellick is the current manager of Tokorangi Farm, with her work supported by owner Jill Kellick, along with casual workers Lucy Kellick, Phil Wills, Zac Lilburn and Georgie Duncan.
Today, the 150-year-old family operation spans 700ha (660ha effective). Faced with the challenges of a changing climate and evolving markets, Kate has embraced diversification. Alongside the traditional sheep and beef farming, she’s introduced a shedding sheep stud and started producing mānuka honey. Meanwhile, 117ha features regenerating mānuka as part of the Emissions Trading Scheme and a further 76ha is leased out – planted in maize for grain.
Sustainability is at the heart of the property’s operations. Kate prioritises land regeneration, with steep gullies left to regenerate naturally and low stocking rates implemented on erosion-prone areas. Active pest control, a robust animal health plan and reticulated stock water all contribute to Tokorangi Farm’s healthy ecosystem.
The judges were particularly impressed with the significant erosion control efforts, saying the regeneration of native vegetation was remarkable and has the added bonus of providing shade for stock and habitat for native birds. Sediment traps across the farm are further strengthening the control of erosion.
Technology also plays an important role in optimising farm operations. The use of drones for stock mustering and farm inspections enhances efficiency and improves animal welfare.
Tokorangi Farm exemplifies the spirit of innovation and adaptability in New Zealand agriculture. By embracing diversification, focusing on sustainability, and leveraging technology, Kate is ensuring that her family legacy continues to thrive for generations to come.
