Awatuna — Auroa Farming for the Future
Catchment Group

4 Feb 2026

The philosophy that is driving this Taranaki catchment group is that productive farming and rigorous environmental stewardship are not opposing forces, but essential partners.

Awatuna/Auroa Farming for the Future is aiming to create a legacy of thriving farms and healthy waterways – demonstrating to the wider sector that good ecological practice is simply good business.

The group began as a pest free initiative to protect native plants and wildlife, before officially being established as a catchment group in 2020.

Today, the group involves about 30 properties which cover well over half of the catchment area. It is a collective of farmers and community members united through a desire to use technology and shared knowledge to future-proof their land and livelihoods.

Awatuna/Auroa Farming for the Future’s activity is defined by practical, data-driven action. Since January 2022, they have conducted monthly water testing to establish baselines and identify trends. To date, they have completed two years of eDNA and macroinvertebrate testing, providing them with a forensic understanding of local biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Their work extends well beyond the riverbanks, with the group becoming a hub for local connection. They host regular workshops on such things as soil health and fish passages, plus have a strong focus on strengthening ties between farmers, iwi, and industry partners.

Awatuna/Auroa Farming for the Future is investing in the next generation by introducing the Agri4kids programme into the local school, ensuring children understand the vital link between agriculture and the environment.

While the group’s scope has expanded to include water and soil, members haven’t forgotten their roots and pest control remains a core pillar of their work to protect native bush.

By building knowledge and supporting one another, Awatuna/Auroa Farming for the Future is creating a resilient, connected community ready to face the challenges of the future.
