Araparera Community Catchment Society Ltd

4 Feb 2026

While still in its early days, the Araparera Community Catchment group is demonstrating that the best defence against an unpredictable climate is a connected neighbourhood.

The Auckland Anniversary floods were a key factor in its formation, with the devastation mobilising a movement defined by resilience, environmental stewardship and a return to old-fashioned community values.

Confronted by the sheer power of the water, the residents of Araparera realised that navigating future extreme weather events would require a united front. The Society was formed with a clear, dual-pronged goal: to knit the community together and to help heal the catchment that binds them.

The response from the catchment’s 320 households has been fantastic. This is built on a collective understanding that a community connected to the land and river feels stronger, and they are building that strength through social cohesion.

More than 100 residents have attended each of the four community dinners organised so far, building connections over shared meals. A monthly newsletter, hand-delivered to every letterbox, helps to ensure all residents remain in the loop.

The Society has numerous other activities underway to improve their understanding of their environment. These include eDNA testing and fish surveys which have yielded positive results. Testing at six local sites revealed the presence of Aucklandica – a rare freshwater mussel – at three locations.

At the same time, the group is rolling out practical measures for safety. Well-received workshops on emergency planning are helping locals prepare for future extreme weather events, while a water quality monitoring project involves deploying units to track the river’s health in real-time.

By blending hard science with social engagement, the Araparera Community Catchment Society is building a blueprint for the future. They are guided by the belief that if you care for the people, you care for the environment and – ultimately – you can build a catchment capable of weathering any storm.
