The fourth-generation couple behind this family farm are proving that cutting-edge innovation and soil science are the cornerstones of a resilient arable operation.

Since 2018, Andrew and Amy Darling have been at the helm of Adar Farming, a 482ha (480ha effective) farm that typically grows wheat, barley, oilseed rape, turf ryegrass and feed peas.

Their data-driven approach has streamlined practices across the operation, resulting in optimised inputs and exceptional crop yields – even through drier spells.

Their success is based on the early adoption of technology and data integration. Comprehensive hectare grid soil sampling has been used to map the land for more than a decade.

This long-term data – combined with satellite imagery, variable rate nutrient maps, and leaf and grain testing – creates a detailed nutrient use cycle. This precision allows the team to apply fertilisers exactly where needed, significantly reducing waste and environmental impact.

A key innovation is the use of biologicals to boost the soil’s organic matter levels. Alongside minimal tillage and consistent tramlines, this has resulted in deep, healthy soils that enable the dryland farm to achieve high yields without relying on irrigation.

The judges were impressed by the overall adoption of innovation and technology, saying that it has directly streamlined farming practices and optimised inputs into the farming operation.

The resilience of the business is also built on the family’s diverse skill set – allowing them to keep essential labour, repairs, and data analysis in-house. Amy has a background in soil science and leads the agronomic strategy. This complements Andrew’s background in mechanics and data capture, and the farming experience of Andrew’s father Warren.

The Darlings are showcasing a model of responsibility and legacy – one where technology and proactive environmental practices ensure both profitability and sustainability for future generations.
