This Northland family is keeping a time-honoured tradition alive at their sheep and beef farm, while maintaining a sustainable balance between production and preservation.
Murray and son Dean Child are the current stewards of this 395ha (309ha effective) property that has been in their family for 160 years. Their ancestors chose the land for its plentiful water and Kauri trees, and the family continues to focus on managing it sustainably for future generations.
Outstanding farming practices are built on long traditions that include driving their annual draft of cattle to sale on horseback for the past 40 years. This is possible due to meticulous breeding techniques that ensure the cattle retain their calm temperament.
It’s a reflection of wider animal husbandry expertise across both the sheep and cattle operations. This complements exceptional nutrient management that includes routine soil testing and tailored fertiliser application. In addition, robust health and safety protocols are in place, along with a strong focus on waste management.
The diverse property features 86ha of native bush, including a stand of mature Kauri trees and picturesque gullies with waterfalls. Waterways are partially fenced off, and the farm includes blocks of plantation pines.
More recently, Dean has brought a fresh perspective to the farm after his 20 years as an arborist and avocado grower. This generational transition – along with support from wife Kathy – enables Murray to run working dog training days around the North Island. His admirable community involvement also involves acting as an ambassador for a well-known dog food brand.
The Childs are guided by a philosophy of being steady, grounded, and deeply connected to the land. The judges praised this, saying the approach has resulted in traditional livestock farming being done exceptionally well – with consistently high results.
Their dedication to the land means they are admirable ambassadors for sustainable farming and look set to ensure the farm continues to thrive into the future.
