Longview Farm is a great example of how intergenerational vision and ecological stewardship can drive a modern agricultural business.

The family behind the 568ha (524ha effective) Otago beef, sheep and deer operation are striking an impressive balance between commercial production and environmental protection.

Morgan France and partner Ruby Herron hold a significant stake in the business, working alongside Morgan’s mother and fellow owner, Kerry. While Morgan handles the breeding and finishing operation, Kerry leads work in their Perendale sheep stud.

Their diverse business derives 70% of its income from sheep, with the balance evenly split between cattle and deer. This provides critical resilience that insulates the business against market volatility.

The judges were particularly impressed by the integration of these enterprises and the early adoption of technology which ensures stock health is at the forefront of industry standards.

Environmental health is treated with the same precision as animal husbandry. Morgan has been establishing native plants on the farm since his school days, and today the family propagates eco-sourced seeds at an on-farm nursery.

Combined with rigorous predator and pest control programmes, these efforts have transformed the landscape into a sanctuary for rare New Zealand falcons and tui.

The property’s infrastructure has been well thought out and constructed, with the judges praising its sophisticated internal lanes and reticulated water system.

Soil health is protected through a meticulous winter grazing plan and the use of direct drilling to minimise disturbance.

The family has strong connections to their local community, including being actively involved in the Pomahaka catchment group.

With an approach that combines careful commercial management and dedicated conservation efforts, Longview Farm looks set to continue flourishing for future generations.
