Gavin Jordan & Julie Fleming
Kamahi

4 Feb 2026

The operation of this sheep and beef farm demonstrates how deep family connections and strategic alliances can drive profitability, sustainability and environmental renewal.

Owned and run by Gavin Jordan and Julie Fleming, the 288ha (223ha effective) Kamahi is not merely a single farm but a crucial anchor within a six-property collective. Its management showcases a robust business model that prioritises collective strength and forward-thinking stewardship.

Kamahi operates as a private company in close partnership with the wider family’s Mangaohutu Station, allowing Gavin and Julie to maintain operational independence while benefiting from shared resources.

This structure embodies a commitment to family and resilience, ensuring that each farm is managed with autonomy but always within a framework of collective responsibility. The structure has evolved to enable sons to enter farm ownership within an equity partnership system.

The journey of Kamahi since its purchase in 2016 is a testament to responsible stewardship. Finding the land unloved, Gavin and Julie undertook a comprehensive renewal project that included rebuilding fences, upgrading structures, and intensive land restoration.

Environmental protection has been a major focus, including significant riparian planting, the protection of waterways and the ring-fencing of native bush. This proactive approach is ensuring the land’s long-term vitality.

The farm’s income is split between sheep (60 per cent) and cattle (40 per cent), with profitability relying on robust, constantly evolving systems.

Technology is integrated across the business to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Tools are used for precision pasture maintenance and animal health monitoring – ultimately leading to agile, informed decision-making.

Meanwhile, genetic enhancement programmes ensure the herd and flock consistently produce high-quality livestock.

Looking ahead, succession planning remains a priority for Gavin and Julie. By upskilling their children and combining decades of traditional wisdom with modern tools, the Jordans are ensuring Kamahi and the wider portfolio remain resilient and productive for generations to come.
