The custodian of this sheep and beef operation is successfully blending nearly a century of legacy with modern, sustainable practices to elevate its performance and secure its future.
Brayden McKenzie returned to Circle D Ranch in 2015, becoming the fourth generation of his family to farm the 767ha (670ha effective) property. He feels privileged to raise his own family on the land and takes great satisfaction in improving the land and producing high-quality livestock.
Today, 2,300 ewes and 220 cows are run across the sheep and beef breeding and finishing operation. Income is split fairly evenly between sheep meat and beef, with a small amount derived from wool sales. Brayden’s dedication to producing quality livestock is evident in his growing stud herd which he started in 2022.
Significant infrastructure improvements have been carried out over the past 10 years, including creek fencing, subdivision, and re-grassing programmes.
The judges were impressed with the careful consideration behind the new subdivision fencing that ensures every fence aligns with appropriate land use. This strategic approach, combined with strong grazing management, has led to great pasture utilisation and improved feed efficiency – directly supporting better stock performance and sustainability.
Brayden is currently trialling willow and poplar stakes and actively planting pines to stabilise the land. This is part of a broader commitment to sustainability that includes afforestation, bush retirement, and waterway fencing. Ultimately, this has resulted in a significant drop in the amount of sediment entering the waterways, improved water quality and enhanced biodiversity.
The judges praised the high quality of the farm’s livestock, due to Brayden’s excellent animal husbandry that includes such things as ensuring water troughs are in most paddocks.
Succession planning is well underway, with Brayden working closely with a facilitator and the entire family to achieve the best possible outcomes. This foresight looks set to cement a lasting farming legacy for this family farm.
