2025 Northland Finalists: Board of Trustees and Matthew Payne of Whangaroa Ngaiotonga Trust – Beef

The team behind this Hikurangi farm has achieved remarkable success in transforming a neglected farm into a thriving business – while also protecting and enhancing the environment.

Whangaroa Ngaiotonga Trust is a 1,050ha property, with its 658ha effective area including 298ha of pine forest.

The Trust has put its full support behind farm manager Matthew Payne who has transformed the property over the past three years with the help of partner Tori Norman and farm worker Kieran Wetere-Hepi. What was a neglected farm with zero infrastructure is now a high-performing farm with all vulnerable areas fenced off.

Key achievements include substantial investment in fencing, water infrastructure, and farm roads which have significantly improved the efficiency of farming operations. There is also excellent pasture management that includes careful fertiliser use and weed control – enhancing soil health and increasing carrying capacity.

The judges were impressed with the implementation of essential practices such as intensive boundary fencing, cell-subdivision, and water reticulation – all of which have streamlined production, enhanced pasture control, and improved feed quality.

Meanwhile extensive fencing and planting projects have protected wetlands, native bush, and waterways – enhancing biodiversity and preserving the property’s natural beauty. In total, about 23km of fencing has been installed to protect these vulnerable areas.

The judges said the transformation of this property over the past few years was remarkable, with a diversified approach that includes bull-beef production, honey, and forestry.

Looking ahead, the Trust plans to further diversify operations, exploring opportunities in water storage and horticulture. These initiatives aim to enhance climate resilience, provide employment opportunities for the local community, and promote the cultural and environmental values of the property.

The Board of Trustees and Matt were the winners of the Rabobank Agri-Business Management Award and the NZFET Climate Recognition Award.
