Dairy Patch

In a remarkable display of innovation and commitment to animal welfare, the owners of this Southland dairy farm have achieved significant gains in efficiency by leveraging sophisticated technology.
Moving to the property in 2007, Ivan and Denise Hopper have built a self-contained 255ha operation (242ha effective), deriving most of their income from milk and a small 10% slice from beef.
They see Dairy Patch as a family legacy that provides a stepping stone for their children’s futures – including daughter Kelly-Anne who is actively involved in running the farm.
The family’s core philosophy is simple: feed the world high-quality food from animals that are exceptionally well cared for.
The judges were impressed with the team’s knowledge of dairy farming and high level of animal welfare.
Central to this is an innovative, comprehensive robotic system that facilitates a five-way grazing rotation, enabling exceptional grazing management. They also use technology to guide a sophisticated, real-time approach to farm management, demonstrating the family’s excellent understanding of both their land and technology.
Their drive for efficiency combines with consistent capital investment in infrastructure. Judges commended the farm’s excellent feed pad that features specially grooved concrete that is designed for cow comfort – ensuring a high quality of life for all stock.
This investment is part of a decade-long strategic plan that has already achieved goals set nine years ago, dramatically improving the business’s direction and efficiency.
Beyond the farm gate, the Hoppers are deeply connected to their community. They actively participate in their local catchment group and host community planting days and discussion groups where they showcase their operation.
With detailed health monitoring, including four cow checks per year, a body condition scoring system, and a clear plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Dairy Patch is an inspiring example of precision farming, sustainability, and outstanding animal husbandry.
