The farmer behind this Taihape sheep and beef farm is demonstrating that practical innovation and careful land management can lead to both high production and environmental stewardship.
Henare Trust’s 335ha (305ha effective) geography presents unique challenges, particularly with occasional land movement. To protect his infrastructure, owner Derek Mickleson has made technical adaptations, including a specialised drainage system and tension-relieving springs on fence lines.
The judges were impressed with Derek’s understanding of land class and soil health. Regular soil and herbage testing dictate the application of fertiliser, ensuring nutrient levels are precisely maintained.
To protect the soil structure during the wet season, heavy cattle are moved off the hills and onto drier ground – keeping both the pasture and livestock in better condition.
Space-planted poplar poles have been established across nearly every paddock to combat erosion. The judges praised the excellent pruning which is maximising soil stability and providing vital shade.
Derek’s planting strategy is also tailored to animal behaviour – for example, native trees and flaxes have been established in specific blocks where ewes naturally seek shelter from southerly winds during lambing.
The farm’s natural environment is further protected through an active weed and pest control programme. Annual sweeps are carried out to clear Old Man’s Beard, an invasive vine that threatens the region’s native bush. Derek also maintains a consistent trapping and shooting programme for pest animals which is helping to boost native bird populations.
The judges were impressed with Derek’s animal husbandry skills, for example providing all stock with custom mineral blends to optimise performance.
His attention to detail has even yielded historical finds, with the discovery of Moa bones on the property leading to a collaboration with Te Papa and Victoria University.
A combination of technical innovation and rigorous land management is setting Henare Trust to remain a productive, resilient enterprise for generations to come.
