Run by the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust, the awards champion sustainable farming and growing. The Greater Wellington Ballance Farm Environment Awards were announced on 29 June.

Patrizia and Rod emigrated to New Zealand in 2011 after purchasing Rewa Rewa Station where they run 4,300 Romney sheep, 140 Angus cattle, cashmere goats and alpaca. Significant improvements to infrastructure have ensured the business is more resilient and responds to climate change, plus there’s an impressive environmental programme.

Bi-annual soil testing and careful fertiliser management is their number one tool. The result is a significant correction in the soil balance, resulting in improved pasture, increased animal health and better profits.

The judges said Rod and Patrizia’s inspiring leadership was reflected in the station’s positive workplace culture. They were impressed with how they shared their knowledge and skills with visitors and how they were open to trialling new ideas.

“The climate and topography of the property guides its management, and they have a great understanding of carbon sequestration and how to off-set emissions.”

Patrizia and Rod also won the Bayleys People in Primary Sector Award, Norwood Agri-Business Management Award and QEII National Trust Farm Stewardship Award.

A Field Day will be held at Rewa Rewa later this year.

New Zealand Landcare Trust Catchment Group Award

Providing leadership around the careful management of natural resources has earned Wainuioru Community River Care Group the New Zealand Landcare Trust Catchment Group Award for Greater Wellington.

A wide cross-section of the community is involved in the group that is striving for a healthy river and thriving community. They monitor water quality, carry out extensive native planting and have established a native nursery at the local school.

The judges said this motivated group had great governance structure and support, with its work informed by a solid understanding of the catchment and its people. Their future focus is guided by clear goals and there’s an outstanding balance between action and strategy.
